Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Diseworth Primary School, our aim is to develop and care for the whole child educationally, emotionally, spiritually, morally and physically. As well as caring for their education, we also care for their mental health and wellbeing and feel that it is essential to provide children with information to enable them to make lifelong, well informed decisions about their diet and health.

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) ELSA is a project designed to help support the emotional needs of pupils. ELSA acknowledges that children learn best when they feel happier and their emotional needs are being met. We are fortunate to have Ms Gothard who is trained to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils in our school either on a 1:1 basis or small group work.

Family and mental well-being lead We also have our own lead Nicola Robe working with us on a Thursday afternoon. She is a consistent factor in school working closely with parents, children and staff. Nicola supports children who have had or are having adverse childhood experiences such as domestic violence, bereavement, anxiety and any other life experiences that may affect their emotional well-being. She is a fully trained ELSA, is also trained to be a Mental Health First Aider and is a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. Nicola has good links with outside agencies making contact as and when the need arises. Nicola also has a basic counselling skills qualification but for more difficult cases she can directly refer children to our trained counsellor Sam Howell.

Sam Howell - Akira counselling Akira Counselling is a bespoke one to one counselling service offering emotional wellbeing support to children, young people and adults online and within educational settings.
